“She transformed her bedroom into a pretty pink winter wonderland inspired by the Nutcrackers Land of Sweets ~ it was a place where sugar plum fairies waltz amongst mischievous mice, snowy swans, dainty ballerinas and the cutest confectionary…”
Decorating my bedroom for Christmas is one of my most treasured wintry traditions and each year I love to follow a whimsical theme.
There’s something so magical about lighting a sweetly scented candle, listening to the Nutcracker score and setting up my snowy white tree.
At the end of November I saw the Nutcracker ballet with my mother. It is one of my favourite traditions and I always feel so inspired by this ballet when it comes to decorating my bedroom.
The Land of the Sweets is an endless source of inspiration for me ~ with gooey gumdrops, sugary sweets, soft snow flurries, sparkly tutus and dainty ballerinas ~ I decided to recreate this dreamland in my very own room so that as I drift off to sleep each night I can transform into Clara.
Here is my little step-by-step guide on how to create a cosy, fairytale-like look for your bedroom!
Cosy Essentials
Before we begin decorating, I think its crucial to create a cosy, whimsical atmosphere that will keep you inspired! My first place to look is to my Pinterest boards which is an endless source of inspiration ~ I have created my very own Winter Wonderland board where I pin everything that makes my heart happy during the Christmas season.
Once you have gathered some inspiration, I loved to light a dreamy candle! My favourite for winter is the Snowflake Cookie from Yankee Candle. It has the most heavenly notes of marshmallow, vanilla icing and sugar cookies!
The key to creating the most relaxing atmosphere is whimsical music and the Nutcracker Suite is my favourite! Every time I listen to it I feel as though I have been whisked away on a fluffy cloud where the snowflakes swirl ands sparkle in their tutus. My Christmas Wishes playlist on Spotify is my favourite and you can listen to all the festive classics.
To keep yourself going, why not treat yourself to a hot chocolate filled with fluffy marshmallows? I decided to use my Sass and Belle Freya Swan mug which is just too cute.
I also made my signature Snowflake Sugar Cookies ~ I shared the recipe on my blog back in January and they are my favourite “go-to” for a sweet pick-me-up.
Beautiful Ballerina
To live out your Nutcracker daydreams to the fullest, it is important to dress the part! Needle and Thread is my favourite designer for classic, dainty pieces that look as though they have been plucked from a classic fairytale. My tulle tiered ballerina-inspired dress was purchased a few years ago but they have so many beautiful gowns in their latest collection! I’m currently heart-eyed over the Andromeda dress ~ it reminds me of something Elsa would wear in her ice palace.
Once you are dressed in your most beautiful ballerina ballgown and you have treated yourself to a sugary sweet ~ it’s time to decorate…
Fairytale Decor
I love to add little touches of feminine, pretty decor to my bedroom throughout the year and a few months ago, I purchased two beautiful pieces which I am going to treasure and display for many years to come…
The first piece is this Puppy and Ballerina Snow globe; I treasured snow globes as a child and I have been looking for my perfect ballerina one and when I spotted this on eBay I couldn’t leave it behind! The snow globe presents a wintry, snow scene with a delicate ballerina in the centre alongside an adorable snow puppy with white fur. Once the dial is turned, the ballerina twirls around to the symphony of the Emperor Waltz by Johann Strauss, a dream-like melody. I have also fallen in love with the dainty bow adorning the side of the globe…
The second ornament I discovered is the dainty ballerina figurine from Gisela Graham.
It features an elegant ballerina poised in the most graceful swan-like pose.
Her tutu is adorned with sparkly silver beads that glitter and shine in the light. The crown she wears is one of my favourite features as it reminds me of the cygnets in Swan Lake…
I also have a pink glittery Nutcracker doll and soft pink fawn which I love to display each year for that added magical touch!
This year my advent calendar is from Peggy Porschen; It is presented in the dreamiest pastel pink shade, with snow falling around a wintry scene, the whimsical parlour placed in the centre and adorned with fresh flowers. The calendar is filled with an assortment of pink champagne truffles dusted with icing sugar.
When you have arranged your additional pieces of decor around your room, you may begin assembling your tree…
I purchased my tree from Debenhams two years ago; it is only 3ft tall but this is the perfect size for my room. Make sure to measure the space where you’ve chosen to place your tree so that you can achieve an ideal fit. Next you must select your tree’s colour; instead of the classic fern green, I decided to go for a tree with white branches and flecks of glitter. I adore this detailing as it adds a dreamy, romantic touch. If you’re feeling even more girly, you could opt for a pink tree…
Choosing a theme for your tree isn’t a necessity but I think it helps tie everything together. Whether you decide to follow a traditional theme of red, green and gold or, my chosen combination of white, pink, and rose gold, remember to make it your own!
My ornaments match the colour scheme wonderfully and I have decided to follow a style inspired by the ‘Land of Sweets’ from the Nutcracker ballet; nestled on the branches of my tree I have an arrangement of graceful ballerinas, dainty mice, scrumptious sweets, and satin bows!
Choosing a specific colour theme and type of decoration makes shopping so much easier. During trips to Homesense and Tk Maxx I knew exactly what I was looking for and when I managed to spot items that fit my theme, I immediately added them to my basket.
Remember to purchase those special items when you first see them as waiting around will probably lead to disappointment later on!
I have an assortment of dreamy baubles from previous years that I still love to display but this year I also purchased a few new ones!
All my ballerina dreams came to life when I spotted this collection of ornaments on the John Lewis website
Many of you will be aware of my love for Disney and this year I purchased the prettiest set of Marie ornaments from Primark!
They depict Marie wrapped up in her cosiest wintry accessories which is too cute for words.
I have also been longing for some of the princess sketchbook ornaments which Disney release every Christmas and I managed to spot the Aurora and Ariel decorations on eBay! Both princesses are dressed in their most beautiful pink ballgowns and bundled up in their chic winter capes!
The Sass and Belle Swan decoration is one of my favourite purchases of the year! It presents a mother swan and her little cygnet curled up together. I adore the soft pink touches and glitter adorning the wings ~ it evokes all my swan lake dreams!
The last selection of ornaments I picked up from Maisons du Monde ~ they have the cutest array of decor for all seasons but I couldn’t resist purchasing the pink car under a bell jar decoration ~ it creates the sweetest image of driving home for Christmas.
I then purchased their Christmas Mouse decoration which depicts the sweetest little mouse with a stack of golden gifts!
Once you have everything ready to go, you can start assembling your tree. I found this to be a simple process as it only entailed fitting the feet of the tree to the base. Check that you have all your branches facing outward; you may need to leave the tree for a few minutes to rest in position before adding your ornaments.
Lights are so important and I like to add mine at the start as I find it quite stressful adding them after the decorations. This year I am using a set of miniature rose gold hearts with white lights. I adore this set because they look like individual heart baubles. Nevertheless, if you don’t want to use this style, you can keep it simple with some dainty fairy lights to add a subtle sparkle.
Now you can begin adding all your sparkly baubles and decorations!
I always start small and place my dainty ornaments, such as the ballerina mouse, pointe shoes and dancing ballerinas, at the front.
I then like to add the larger ornaments such as the pink poodle, glittery couture dress, and Cinderella-style church bell, around the sides of the tree.
Make sure to place your ornaments evenly around the tree so that everything is balanced.
Once you have finished decorating it is now time for some well-deserved rest! Put on your fluffiest slippers, make yourself a hot chocolate, maybe treat yourself to a piece of sugar-dusted stollen and snuggle up to watch one of your favourite Christmas classics!
